It is our mission to be the premier aviation services provider in the Upper Midwest by being perceived as a valued problem solver within our industry.

Our organization was founded on the premise that folks in the Upper Midwest aviation industry were searching for exceptional services. Today, we take on the challenge to continually strive to be better and provide the level of service our customers deserve.

1990

Bismarck Aero Center was first founded in 1990 as Aircraft Management Services (AMS) by Bob Simmers. The company specialized in aviation consulting, specialized flight training, aircraft storage and pilot services.

2002

In 2002, Bob partnered up with long time Director of Maintenance, Mike Aarestad, and expanded operations to include aircraft maintenance and repair. The partnership was a defining moment in our company history. It allowed us to further our aviation services and build strong relationships within the aviation community.

2006

Then in 2006, we continued to diversify our services by forming the subsidiary, Dakota Avionics. With our Limited Repair Station Certification from the FAA, we began offering avionic sales and repair. Our facility is one of the largest in the region and is equipped to handle all aircraft maintenance and avionics needs. From stick and fabric to turbine powered aircraft, our technicians can take care of it.

2008

Our biggest change came in 2008, when we became Bismarck, ND’s newest full-service FBO and changed our name to Bismarck Aero Center. North of the General Aviation Ramp off Alpha 1, we began to offer Jet-A and 100LL fuel, professional concierge services, 20-minute quick turns and other great amenities you expect from a top notch FBO. We pride ourselves on our 24/7 certified NATA staff, blue “Air Elite” carpet service for all customers and providing #1 customer service at KBIS.

2022

Most recently in February, 2022, we purchased Bismarck Air Medical and Bismarck Air Charter, operating a King Air 200 & C-90. Both organizations came with a team of highly professional pilots that are ready to provide the vital air medical and private charter transportation our community needs.

FAQs

What is Bismarck Aero Center and what can we do for you?

Bismarck Aero Center is a 24/7 full service FBO at the Bismarck Municipal Airport. We serve the general aviation industry with aircraft fueling, maintenance, avionics, hangar storage, pilot services, aircraft rental and flight instruction. Our sister company, Mandan Aero Center, provides the Mandan Municipal Airport with maintenance, avionics and hangar storage. Together, we work hard to provide our customers with timely private aviation solutions, regardless what the problem is.

What are the values that Bismarck Aero Center follows?

Everyone here believes in the same set of company values. Following these core values have helped us build strong relationships since our establishment in 1990.

Solver: Take the initiative. This is our competitive advantage
Our Customer: We exist and prosper only because of the customer.
Allegiance: Loyalty to our fellow co-workers.
Responsible: Acts with integrity and trust, and is a good steward of aviation and our community.

What does FBO stand for?

Fixed Base Operator or FBO refers to a business that is granted the right, by the airport, to provide aeronautical services. FBO’s are the primary providers to general aviation pilots. The term fixed base operator came from post-World War I era. With the passage of the Air Commerce Act of 1926, pilots and aircraft mechanics were required to become licensed and meet new training requirements. They started to move away from the transient nature of civil aviation of the early 1920s and began to establish permanent businesses on popular airports. Hence becoming fixed base operators.

Do you do anything for kids or adults that are interested in learning more about general aviation?

Absolutely! Bismarck Aero Center is always happy to talk with and give facility tours to kids or adults that are interested in aviation. As ambassadors of the aviation industry, we feel it is our duty to continually educate our community on aviation and the benefits it brings. We have worked with individuals to small classes and summer learning programs to the annual aviation career day, which hosts over 700 5th graders at the Bismarck Airport each year. It all starts with a simple phone call to our marketing department.

I want to be a pilot! Where do I start?

Obtaining your private pilot license is not as hard as you would think. First, check out the requirements on our Flight Instruction page. That will give you a quick overview of the hours and requirements you will need to meet. Then, we will get you in touch with one of our experienced Certified Flight Instructors (CFI). They will step you through the process and pricing for learning to fly. Finally, we work with you and your schedule to set you up on your first lesson.

I am doing a community event or fundraising and would like to know if Bismarck Aero Center would like to be involved?

Bismarck Aero Center and its employees enjoy volunteering and working to help make our community a better place. Though we would like to, we are not able to contribute to all the great causes out there. Our primary focus is working to improve or promote the aviation industry, education (especially aviation education) and our Bismarck/Mandan community. We do make some contributions to other types of causes, but these are our main causes. If you have a good cause that you think meets this criteria, please talk to our marketing department about what Bismarck Aero Center could do to help!

We invite you to look around our website to learn more about how we can serve your aviation needs and make sure to contact us with any questions you have. We will always be happy to assist you!
